“(Pick)le Your Red Onions Carefully!”
These beautiful sweet pickled red onions can add flavor and color to just about any dish. Use them to garnish a salad, fried fish or to your burgers for some added taste. Not only does it add a perfect texture, color and flavor to your dishes but it is also incredibly simple and easy to make.
Recently Maryim and I met up with some old friends for a BBQ at Markham Park in South Florida. We always find an excuse to be out in nature and we absolutely love to cook outdoors too. We decided to make hamburgers so we brought along the pickled red onions and they were such a hit. They added a sweet freshness and crunch to our burger.

Preserve food by pickling
One of my favorite parts about cooking is not really even cooking but pickling. I love how you can take just about any vegetable and completely transform its flavor and color by pickling them.
All you need for pickling is some sort of vinegar (in this recipe I used red wine vinegar), water, salt, sugar, herbs and spices. You can experiment with an enormous array of veggies and flavors. For example, cauliflower and turmeric with apple cider vinegar would be great.
This ancient food preservation technique is used all over the world and for good reason.
- Pickling increases shelf life of vegetables.
- It retains most of the vegetables’ nutrients.
- Research has shown that pickling vegetables can help to reduce high blood pressure as well as lower your chance of heart disease.
These pickled red onions are a gorgeous pinky/purply color that can add vibrance to so many dishes. Who doesn’t love a nice pop of color on a meal!
This recipe should make enough to fill a 12 ounce mason jar and couldn’t be easier to prepare.
