Maryim and I are big fans of homemade Mexican food. Not only is it quick and easy to make but you’re usually got all the ingredients at home already. Tacos can be made with just about any base ingredient from steak, chicken, pork, to more exotic options like chorizo, octopus and tempeh. This taco beef recipe will use ground beef as the protein base.
While we are using ground beef as our base, the basic seasonings and ingredients in this recipe can be incorporated to any other meats or veggies you want to serve in your tacos instead. For our Mexican night we ended up making everything from scratch, however each of these can be store bought too if you’re short on time.
Some typical ingredients you’ll find in a taco include:
- Guacamole
- Pico de Gallo
- Instant sour cream
- Corn tortillas
- Mexican cheese
That Mexican flavor
For this recipe we used store bought Mexican taco beef seasoning. Since we travel from place to place we don’t usually purchase too many ingredients. We either buy a small planter with fresh herbs or we buy a few key spices like salt, pepper and paprika that we can use up.
Of course, no Mexican dish can go without cilantro, so we used fresh chopped cilantro for the most authentic flavor.
Ingredients you will need to make taco beef
- Vegetable oil
- Ground beef
- Garlic
- Onion
- Cilantro
- Tomato sauce (not ketchup), tomato paste or tinned tomatoes (blended)
- Fajita/Taco beef seasoning
- Balsamic vinegar
- Salt and pepper
Done in less then 15 minutes…
- Brunoise (finely dice) your onions and mince up the garlic and cilantro. Have all the other ingredients ready to go.
- Preheat a frying pan on high heat and add the oil. Once hot start sautéing the onions and garlic until they are a golden brown color.
- Add the ground beef and mix in with the onions until the beef is browned.
- Then add the rest of the ingredients. Mix well. The ground beef should not be too runny but should be slightly dry and tight. Keep cooking and stirring on the frying pan until you have reached this consistency. Remove from the heat.
The ground beef is now ready to serve as tacos, burritos, in a tomato sauce as chili or even on its own as a light snack.
